You can only take your theory test once your provisional car licence becomes valid – i.e. no earlier than your 17th birthday. You can, however, book your theory test before your 17th birthday. Below, are the highlights of The Theory test:
- The test costs £23 and is bookable online via www.gov.uk/book-theory-test
- You must pass the theory test before taking the practical test.
- It’s recommended to have started having driving lessons before taking the test.
- We strongly advise that you do plenty of homework beforehand – books, DVDs and apps are available to become familiar with the test formats and the Highway Code.
- To practice the theory test: visit https://www.gov.uk/practise-your-driving-theory-test
- Your instructor will be able to help to answer any questions you may have about the test but if have prepared well, you should have no problem passing the theory test.
- The test is made up of two parts – you must achieve the pass rate in both.
- Clear instructions are given before each part begins.
- 50 multiple-choice questions – touch screen format. The pass rate is 43/50.
- 14 video hazard perception video clips – mouse click format. The pass rate is 44/75.
- You will be given the result shortly after completing the test and if you pass you will feel great – a great boost to your confidence and you will be halfway to throwing away the L plates.
Practical Driving Test
You are free to book your test at any time but our recommendation is to wait until your instructor advises you that you are almost ready. Booking your test will be your responsibility and you will be guided by your instructor as to their availability. Your instructor will also be fully aware of the current waiting times at the local test centres.
- The practical driving test costs £62 and is bookable online via www.gov.uk/book-driving-test
- Discuss possible dates with your instructor prior to booking a test.
- You must have passed the theory test before taking the practical test.
- Our approach to learning to drive is designed to reach a point where both you and your instructor will believe you are ready to take your test.
- If you have not been learning with us and have already booked your test, we advise you to have a few lessons, in any case, to brush up on your skills. Please don’t leave booking lessons until the last minute.
- You will have at least one mock test with your instructor as part of your lessons so that you will know what to expect during the Practical Driving Test.
- Your instructor will explain minor and major faults to you as well as other useful hints and tips.
- The Practical Driving Test takes about 40 minutes to complete and is followed by a debrief which we suggest your instructor also attends.
- When you pass your test, you must notify your insurance company straight away.
- We promise you that the examiners have no pass or fail quotas to meet.
